Having completed the renovation of one home, my wife
and I decided to tackle the next biggest challenge and opportunity by
buying a home needing renovation/transformation/total rebuild and have learned
a great deal in the process.
We found, first and foremost, that building your home
is your dream, your vision, your investment, and your project. Regardless of the confidence you have in your
builder(s), there is nobody that has the risk, the reward, the financial
investment and the potential that you have in your future property/home. Whilst this sounds logical, it requires
change in perspective and mindset in order to execute the process effectively.
The results can be tremendous. The process can be relatively easy if
properly prepared and informed provided you have a high-quality,
high-integrity builder performing the work.
If not, it can be a very painful experience.
Any experience documented here is not meant to be a set of
stories to challenge the integrity, professionalism or workmanship of any
builder. Instead, these stories are
meant to share experience and inform those looking to launch the adventure of
building a custom home. This is an
adventure that, in our experience, can be incredibly rewarding but is like so
many things in life in that you get out of it what you put into it
starting
with the selection of a property, continuing through selection of an
architecture/designer and on through the builder and build process.
